Journey Indiana – Ken Bucklew: Beyond Talent

BUCKLOU.>>RIGHT AFTER HIGH SCHOOL, I WAS HURT REALLY BAD ON A DIVING ACCIDENT SUFFERED PARALYSIS FROM THE NECK DOWN. I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR FOUR AND A HALF MONTHS. I HAD TO LEARN HOW TO WALK AND DO THERAPY WITH MY HANDS, SO THE ACCIDENT A LONG TIME AGO LEFT ME WITH LIMITED SENSATION AND DEXTERITY IN MY HAND. THE WAY I PAINT, I DON’T MOVE MY HAND AND MY FINGERS. ALL OF MY MOTION IS DONE WITH MY UPPER ARM AND SHOULDER, SO SENSE THAT, I HAD TO ADJUST THE WAY I HAVE DONE THINGS AND EVOLVE IN THE WAY OF PAINTING, WHERE I CAN STILL DO IT, BUT WITH A LOT OF LIMITATIONS. MY NAME IS KEN BUCKLOU. I PAINT THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF INDIANA AND I DO IT IS THE BEST I CAN AND HOPEFULLY TO BE AN INSPIRATION TO OTHERS WHO HAD GOTTEN HURT BAD LIKE I HAD AND THINGS THAT THEY NEED TO OVERCOME. I DON’T CONSIDER MYSELF DOES ABLED. I HAVE A LOT OF LIMITATIONS, BUT I TRY TO SEE HOW BLESSED I AM AND NOT TRY TO WHINE OR COMPLAIN ABOUT WHAT I CAN’T DO AND CONCENTRATE ON WHAT I CAN DO AND DO THE BEST I CAN. I WAS ALWAYS INTERESTED IN NATURE AND BECAME AND ANIMAL MASTER CRAFTS AND DID THINGS ON MY OWN. I WAS INTERESTED IN EVERY ANIMALS, EVERY TREES, ALL OF THAT. BY THE SECOND OR THIRD GRADE, I KNEW ALL OF THE TREES AND FLOWERS AND BUGS IN THE WOODS. I WAS THE PERSON THAT PEOPLE CAME TO IF THEY SAW A STRANGE ANIMAL OR LEAF AND I WAS DOING THE THINGS I HAD A HUNGER FOR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT, NATURE. I WAS INTERESTED IN DRAWING IT. THE SUBJECT MATTER FOR MY ARTWORK IS JUST WHAT I’M EXPOSED TO WHAT I SEE, IT IS THE BIRDS, THE ANIMALS, THE FLOWERS, THE WILDLIFE, THE LANDSCAPE, WHAT IS NATIVE TO OWEN COUNTY AND SOUTHERN INDIANA, AND ALSO THE PLACES I GO, ALSO. MOSTLY WHAT I DO IS WHAT I’M FAMILIAR WITH AND WHAT I KNOW. I HAVE TO BE THERE TO SEE IT, TASTE IT, SMELL IT TO BE INSPIRED BY IT. I FOLLOW THE SEASONS A LOT WHEN I PAINT. IT IS A DAY LIKE TODAY. I DID THE PHOTOGRAPHY FOR IT A YEAR AGO. I LAYED OUT THE PAINTING A YEAR AGO, BUT I DIDN’T GET STARTED ON IT WHEN I WANTED. NOW I’M PAINTING IT WHEN WE’RE GOING THROUGH THE SAME SEASON AGAIN. THE LARGER AREAS AND SMALLER AREAS AND WHERE YOU’RE GOING TO FIT THE TURKEYS IN. I WILL DOODLE SOME SKETCHES AND HOW I WANT THE VIEWER’S EYE TO FLOW THROUGHOUT THE. PAINTING. THIS ONE HAS A FLOCK OF TURKEYS IN IT, ONCE IT HAS IT ROUGHED IN AND SIT BACK AND COMPOSITIONALLY, I THINK IT IS GOING TO WORK AND ONCE THAT DRIES, I’M READY TO MIX AND MATCH MY COLORS AND I TEST IT ON MY PHOTOGRAPHS. I USE MY PHOTOGRAPHS ON THE TEST STRIP. THE ALUMINUM, YOU CAN PAINT ON THE TOP OF THEM AND PAGE ON THE BOTTOM OF THEM. SOME PEOPLE LIKE TO COLLECT THEM. I DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY DO WITH THEM, MAYBE MOBILES AND HANG THEM ON THEIR PORCH OR WHATEVER. I WAS THE ALL TIME WINNER THE DUCK STAMP COMPETITION. THEY USED TO HOST AN ANNUAL NATIONAL COMPETITION AND I WON THE GAME BIRD STAMP 11 TIMES AND THE DUCK STAMP SIX TIMES. SEVERAL YEARS AGO, MY BARBER OVER HERE IN ELLISVILLE, A BIG BIRD HIS WINDOW AND HE SAID I GOT A BIG BIRD THAT HIT THE WINDOW AND KILLED ITSELF AND I SAID PUT IT IN A BAGGY AN PUT IT IN THE REFRIGERATOR AND I WILL COME AND GET IT. ABOUT 5:00 IN THE AFTERNOON, I LAYED IT OUT IN THE BIRDBATH AND I’M PHOTOGRAPHING BACK WHEN EVERYTHING IS .35-MILLIMETER. MY STOMACH WAS GROWLING BECAUSE I HADN’T EATEN AND AFTER I WAS DONE PHOTOGRAPHING, I CLEANED IT AND BAKED IT IN THE OVEN WITH A BAKED POTATO, SO I GOT TO EAT MY SUBJECT MATTER AND I GOT THE PHOTOGRAPHS DEVELOPED AND IT CAME OUT PRETTY GOOD. THE PAINTING GOT A BIRD STAMP COMPETITION, SO YOU DON’T GET MORE MILEAGE FROM A BIRD THAN THAT. ONE OF MY GOALS THROUGH MY PAINTING IS TO PRESERVE THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF INDIANA THROUGH MY TRADITIONAL PAINTINGS AND HUMBLING BE AN EXAMPLE OF PRESERVATION IN DOING SO TO
